Location:
he 580,000 hectares of
Liwonde National Park is situated in the south of Malawi, and is
Malawi's premier wildlife reserve. Liwonde incorporates the huge and
scenic Shire River as well as quiet backwaters and lagoons, marshes,
open savannah country, woodland and hills.
As a result of the wide
variety of habitats, there is a great diversity of plant, animal and
birdlife present. The birdlife is particularly good - it is possibly
the best birding location in central and southern Africa. The record
for a 2 night stay is 266 species! |

|
Accommodation:
Mvuu Wilderness Lodge boasts
one of the most stunning settings, situated along the banks of the
Shire River, within the Liwonde National Park.
Discreetly tucked away
into the thick riverine vegetation, each tent has its own private view
of the palm fringed lagoon which abounds with exciting bird life.
|
 |
| The main dining room / bar /
lounge is a raised thatched rondavel overlooking the spectacular Shire
River where Elephants at play, snoozing Hippos and basking Crocodiles
are often to be viewed.
Our tented rooms offer luxury en-suite
facilities for only 10 persons including an unique stone and quartz
honeymoon suite! Enjoy meals on the deck under thatch and relax at the
pool in-between activities! |
 |
|
|
Game Viewing / Activities:
Elephant and Sable Antelope
occur in large numbers, as do Hippo, Crocodile, Impala and Waterbuck.
Lion, Leopard, Serval and the rare Oribi may occasionally be seen.
Black Rhino have recently been re-introduced from South Africa's
Kruger National Park, and there are plans to bring back White Rhino
and Buffalo. |
 |
| Birds are prolific,
especially along the Shire River, where African Fish Eagle, Palmnut
Vulture, African Skimmer and Pel's Fishing Owl are fairly common.
Bohm's Bee-eater, Lilian's Love Bird, Bat Hawk, Livingstone's Fly
Catcher, Whitebacked Night Heron and Brownbreasted Barbet are among
the "specials". The Mvuu Hiking Trail is now
available for those who enjoy walking in game reserves. Two nights walking
and camping out in remote areas of the Liwonde Nat. Park is a highlight -
but it must be booked well in advance!
We also do great bicycle trips from
the boundary of Liwonde to the local villages, giving a superb cultural
experience. |
