Chikwenya
Tented Camp - Mana Pools
(5
)
(Zimbabwe)
|
Location:
 |
Chikwenya and Mana Pools National Park have to be one of the most
beautiful sites for a safari anywhere in Southern Africa.
The main
focus at Chikwenya is the tranquil Zambezi River, its open floodplain,
Chikwenya Island and the wonderful wildlife which lives in Mana Pools.
It is a photographer's paradise as tall attractive acacia trees dot
the open floodplains, with the mountains of the Rift Valley providing
the backdrop. |

|
Accommodation:
| The
camp has 18 beds, in 9 superb tented rooms with en suite facilities,
as well as either an outdoor shower or bath "under the stars".
Each
room has a panoramic view onto the floodplains of the Zambezi. One can
lie in bed and watch Elephant and Buffalo stroll past your room.
There
is a pub and lounge under thatch. Breakfasts are enjoyed outdoors
under the shade of an enormous mahogany tree and dinners are often on
the deck under the stars. There is a pool as well. The camp is open
all year.. |

Game Viewing / Activities:
 |
The
area is renowned for its large numbers of Elephant, Buffalo, Hippo,
Lions, Crocodiles and Eland, which concentrate along the river when
the waterholes inland dry up in our winter months. Buffalo graze along
the river's edges and Elephant love the "albida" forests. The seeds
from the "albida" are rich in protein and nutrients and they drop
towards the end of the dry winter months when the animals need the
nutrition the most.
Leopard
are common, although they are not seen as often as Lion. Birdlife is
superb and many species are found here. The Angola Pitta is a birder's top
prize; they nest in the area in December. Shelley's Sunbird, Narina
Trogon, Livingstone Flycatcher and Western Banded Snake Eagle are some of
the summer birding specials. |

Lion and Leopard are in
abundance, but are not seen as often as the main game. Activities
focus on enjoying the scenery and game viewing is done in open 4x4
vehicles, on motorized canoes, on foot, from hides and in canoes.
