October 2007 Wilderness Safaris camps, Mombo and Little Mombo situated in the
Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, were winners,
coming second in the annual
2007 Cond Nast Traveler
Awards in the category: Top 30 Resorts & Camps in
Africa/Middle East, which saw Dubais Burj Al Arab Resort being
declared the winner. With a rating of 96.3, Mombo Camp achieved the
highest score for all camps in Africa, making it the top safari
lodge in Africa.
Mombo and Little Mombo provide arguably the best game viewing in
Botswana. Accommodation is in spacious tents raised off the ground,
each with breathtaking views over a vast floodplain teeming with
wildlife. In the category The 100 Best of the Best Properties in the
World, Mombo came in at a highly respectable 10th place.
The winners were announced at the 20th annual Readers Choice
Awards gala which took place on 11th October 2007 in New York
City at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and will
appear in the November 2007 issue of Cond Nast Traveler.
The results are derived from the largest independent poll of
consumers preferences, the Readers Choice Survey, second in
size only to the U.S. Census. A record number of travelers, over
28 000, voted this year.

In addition to Mombos great accolade, another Wilderness Safaris
camp Vumbura Plains with a rating of 92.9 was placed as 4th
best safari camp in Africa. This is a well-deserved recognition for
a camp which opened in 2005 and which has been an exciting new
development of Wilderness Safaris in Botswanas Okavango Delta.
Vumbura Plains is part of a community participation project that
benefits the surrounding communities through eco-tourism. With two
separate seven-roomed camps, each with its own raised dining, lounge
and bar area, guests are provided with the utmost in luxury, while
exploring the wilderness.
Malcolm McCulloch, Wilderness Safaris CEO, said: It is a great
honor to receive these prestigious awards from Cond Nast Travelers
readers, who are known to be discerning global travelers searching
for authentic experiences. The staff at all Wilderness Safaris 60
camps in 7 different countries join me in congratulating our Mombo
and Vumbura Plains teams who have worked tirelessly and passionately
to exceed our guests expectations. |

Location:
Located in the heart of
the Okavango Delta, hidden from the world and situated just off the
north-western tip of Chief's Island, is the secret paradise of
Mombo.
Sometimes an island of its own, sometimes linked to Chief's
Island, the region is constantly modified by the ebb and flow of the
Delta's waters.
Little Mombo Camp is situated deep within
Moremi, beneath huge trees on the edge of a broad floodplain. |

|
Accommodation:
The design of the
new Mombo is radically different from the old Mombo while still
retaining its tented charm. The camp has a total of 12 identical
guest rooms divided into two distinct and independent camps.
Mombo has 9 rooms
and Little Mombo has 3 rooms. Each tented room is raised off the
ground offering great views over the floodplains. The new rooms have
a tented camp feel, but are luxuriously appointed.
The bathrooms are en suite, including an indoor shower with hot and
cold running water. There is also an outdoor shower. The main living
area is under thatch and canvas.
There are pools at both camps. We
will have raised walkways to link bedrooms and the living area.
Mombo Camp & Little Mombo have a "kgotla" or boma for outdoor dining
under the stars. |

|
Facilities:
Privacy of guests is
ensured, as we have exclusive use of this area for Mombo and our
trails camp.
Apart from the occasional government
official or wildlife film-maker, our staff and the other guests are
the only people you will see during your stay. |

Game Viewing / Activities:
Large concentrations of
wildlife, including all of the large predators, occur in this remote
and isolated wilderness region. Because of its great wildlife,
several award winning wildlife documentaries have been filmed at
Mombo... Mombo provides one of the highest quality wildlife viewing
opportunities in Africa.
Giant umbrella thorns and Ilala palms dot
the expansive plains to create a magnificent savannah landscape
alongside the marshes and floodplains of the Delta. Drives in open 4x4
vehicles and explore the savannah and floodplains where large
concentrations of wildlife and birds abound. Foot trails may be
undertaken if you are after the closest possible contact with
nature.
Experienced
guides will accompany you, ensuring that early morning and late
afternoon excursions are interesting and educational. |
