Location:

within Hwange National Park in the Linkwasha wilderness area on an
exclusive concession of 32 000 hectares.
The Makololo area is
ecologically diverse, including vast open, palm fringed plains,
grasslands, acacia woodlands and Mopane forests.
This ensures a
varied "food pantry" which feeds a great number of animals year

Makalolo Plains is another of the few private camps situated within
Hwange National Park. The Makalolo area is ecologically diverse,

of two small camps which have exclusive use of a massive concession

Accommodation:
|
Makalolo Plains has nine rooms so guests enjoy a wonderful,
personalized service and exclusivity.
The camp is built on a raised teak
platform overlooking the Somavundhla plain, and set in a stand of
teak and False Mopane trees.
The camp accommodates a maximum of
sixteen guests in eight luxury tents, including a honeymoon tent.
The honeymoon tent has a bath which is situated on a platform high
in the shade of a massive teak tree. |

All tents are equipped with twin beds
which can be set up as double beds if required. Each tent has two
showers, one en-suite, the other outdoors with a view. Hot water is
solar heated. There is a basin and flush toilet en-suite.
The tents
have built in mosquito screens. The roofs of the tents are made of
three layers of canvas and shade cloth for added protection. |

Approximately 30 minutes
drive away from Makalolo Plains is a second camp,
Little Makalolo which is set
amongst large teak and False Mopane trees overlooking a waterhole.
The camp accommodates a maximum of eight guests in the same tents as
Makalolo Plains, but with all tents and the bar/dining area set at
ground level.
The camp operates as a separate entity with its own
vehicles, guides, and camp staff. |

Facilities:

The main complex houses the dining room, bar and splash pool, and
has a lounge area with a well chosen selection of books. There is a
deck in front of the bar/lounge area which overlooks the plain, and
provides a good platform for game viewing.
The lodge is powered by a
silenced diesel generator supplying 220v power for the main
refrigerators, and for charging of video batteries etc, but the
tents are illuminated with 12 volt lamps. |

As Makalolo Plains is within Hwange National Park itself, guests'
game viewing starts right at their doorstep.
Game drives in 4x4 Land
Rovers and walks with an armed guide are all part of the experience.
Half and full day game drives with a
maximum of eight passengers per vehicle with a licensed guide. Wind
resistant and waterproof ponchos are provided on all game drives
during the winter months.
Morning and afternoon walks with an armed
specialist guide. Static game viewing at a
waterhole (pan sitting). |

What to
bring...
 |
Binoculars, Good walking
shoes, shirts, shorts and trousers in neutral colors, a good hat,
Warm clothing is advised for the winter months June - September.
Camera and film, Personal toiletries and inspect repellents,
Sunscreen lotion, Reference book for personal interests. It is
advisable to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a reasonable amount of
camera equipment (bearing in mind that guests will have to carry
this with them), binoculars and a good supply of film. There are supplies of film,
toiletries, sun-block, repellents, etc available for purchase at the
camp's shop. PLEASE NOTE - MAKALALO IS A
MALARIA AREA, therefore guests are strongly advised to consult their
physician regarding a suitable course of anti-malaria prophylactics.
Clothing (September through
April)
Guests should wear light
garments of natural bush colours especially on walking safaris. Collared
shirts are recommended rather than T shirts and a wide brimmed hat is
essential (caps are not recommended as they give very little protection
from the sun). Shorts are also recommended although some guests may prefer
to wear trousers for protection. Good 'worn in' walking shoes are also
recommended (trainers are ideal)

Clothing (May through
August)
Hwange can be extremely
cold with night time temperatures around 0ºC, 32ºF. Thermal underwear,
fleeces, jackets and warm socks are recommended for early morning and
evening activities.
Daytime temperatures are moderate at approximately
25ºC. A laundry service is available, which is included in the tariff.
Flashlights are provided in the tents.
There are often wild animals in the
vicinity of the camp at night! Special rates are available
for, private guides and pilots. Please enquire for current rates.
Special
arrangements will be made for honeymoon couples provided the lodge is
notified in advance. |
