DAY 2 SUSSI AND CHUMA LODGE
Start the day with a morning wakeup call with
fresh tea/coffee and biscuits served in your room followed by a morning
activity. Expert guides will take you to explore the mighty Victoria Falls,
a World Heritage Site and one of the magnificent Seven Wonders of the
Natural World. This truly is one of the most spectacular images that one has
the opportunity to experience. Following this morning tour of the Falls,
embark on a unique opportunity to experience life in a local African
village.
During your stay at Sussi & Chuma, one of the included activities guests
experience, is a tour of the local Simonga Village. This Village lies to the
West of the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park on the outskirts of Livingstone and
close to the famed Victoria Falls in Zambia. This simple fishing village is
comprised of roughly 3000 people who live in simple but comfortable mud and
brick houses. Village scouts and guides show guests around the village which
generally includes a courtesy visit to Elizabeth Inongo's House. Elizabeth
is one of the few head ladies in Zambia and is responsible for the
well-being of her ward and of the village in general, and is one of the area
Chief's (Chief Sekute's) primary advisors. The gentleness and care of this
charming and wise elderly woman is immediately apparent upon meeting her.
She has dedicated her life to ensuring that all in her community are well
taken care of, and that each family is allocated sufficient land in order to
sustain their
families. |
 |
|
The village, despite being comprised of 'dirt'
tracks and paths is always immaculate and filled with children playing and
people getting on with their regular day to day lives. It is neither
contrived nor set up for the tourist eye, as are a number of other
'cultural' villages around the world, but offers its visitors true insight
into the daily life of its inhabitants. To the edge of the village sits the
Simonga Basic School which is responsible for the education of its 465
students, with a teaching staff of 14. Besides the basics of reading,
writing and mathematics, other subjects such as art and music are also
included in the curriculum.
The school also understands the
necessity of teaching future generations the importance of farming and
taking care of their families so it keeps chickens, goats and a vegetable
garden that are tended to by the children. This ensures that they have the
necessary agricultural skills to feed their community in the future. The
village only has one openwater well from which the women and children
collect water. They have no electricity, so modern conveniences like
electric cookers, TV's and electrical lights are not present.
For the privileged few an old
car battery is precariously wired up to provide enough power to run a small
radio and the odd light. Many of the staff at Sussi and Chuma are from
Simonga village and we support a number of micro projects designed to
increase the people’s standard of living and well being. These include
drilling a new a water supply to provide safe and clean drinking water to
the community and other self sustaining initiatives which are decided upon
by the community. Guests of Sussi and Chuma that are interested in a deeper,
more personal involvement in Simonga Village are invited to inform their
agent so that arrangements can be made. |
 |
| Return to camp after your morning
activities for a hearty brunch. Spend the afternoon at leisure enjoying
the facilities on offer. Your tree house at Sussi & Chuma is built on
stilts and the rooms are connected by raised walkways allowing game to
pass underneath to access the river.
Relax on your private deck, or by
the river pool, with the sound of snorting hippos in the background.
Mid-afternoon high tea will be served prior to your next activity.
Return to camp for dinner. Evening at Leisure. Guests will have the
remainder of the evening at leisure to relax and enjoy at the hotel.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner (Local drinks included /
Premium brands excluded)

overlooks.
This small and intimate bush camp is
built on a hillside, combining an authentic safari experience under
canvas with 5-star facilities and the wildlife that frequents the area.

perfect vantage point to sit and watch the African bush unfold.
A full range of day and night game drives in the
South Luangwa National Park are offered by the camp, using open 4X4 vehicles
driven by knowledgeable guides.
The emphasis in this area is on the wonderful
opportunities of walking safaris with a professional guide and an armed national
parks scout. Walking safaris offer a different perspective on the bush and its
plentiful inhabitants, experiencing the “little five”.
The afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the game
viewing activity on offer. |

the fauna & flora of the area. After a hearty lunch and time spent enjoying the
comforts of the lodge you take evening game drives which continue after sundown.
You will search by spotlight with your guide for
the elusive nocturnal species – South Luangwa is particularly famous for leopard
